X-Rays
The X-ray session during your child's appointment reveals the condition of their teeth, roots, jaw and overall facial bone composition and is an important tool for McAllen dentists to use during a child's dental or orthodontic visit to RGV Smiles. X-rays is one of the few tools at a dentist office that can show the advanced nature of periodontal disease, tumors and abscesses.
Radiation Concerns
Our McAllen dentists and orthodontists take safety precautions when performing X-rays by using high-speed film to minimize exposure time and lead aprons to prevent exposure to other parts of the body. As a patient at RGV Smiles there is no need to be concerned about the health effects of dental X-rays, your child's exposure to radiation is brief and minimal.
We use three different types of X-rays at RGV Smiles, they are:
- Bitewings: These are the most common kind of X-ray used to find cavities and decay.
- Periapcial X-rays: This type of X-ray takes a broad picture of an entire tooth structure and used to find tooth problems such as impacted teeth, bone loss and abscesses.
- Panoramic X-rays: These X-rays are designed to take an image of an entire mouth to find tumors, cysts and wisdom teeth.
