Bruxism
If you wake up with a sore jaw or a headache, you may be suffering from bruxism, or tooth grinding. People who suffer from bruxism unconsciously grind their teeth together when they are sleeping. Bruxism can cause teeth to become painful or loose and sometimes part of the teeth are literally ground away.
If you or someone you know are suffering from the symptoms of bruxism, contact the trusted dentists at RGV Smiles in McAllen at 956-661-0900 to schedule an appointment.
How bruxism is treated
The appropriate treatment will ultimately depend on what is the cause of the problem. However, based on the amount of tooth damage, it is likely that your dentist will suggest:
- Wearing a protective cover while sleeping- These custom made devices made by your dentist help protect your upper teeth from grinding against the lower teeth.
- Finding ways to relax- Everyday stress is a major cause of bruxism. Anything that reduces stress, like reading a book, listening to music or taking a walk, can help reduce teeth grinding.
- Reducing the “high spots” of one or more teeth- An abnormal bite that can often cause bruxism, can be corrected with new fillings, crowns or orthodontics.
