Why You Should Floss Daily

Your mouth is a door to your body. Everything that makes up your body has come in from your mouth, whether it is food, liquids or bacteria. Bad and harmful bacteria, which are located in dental plaque, cannot be removed only by brushing alone, which is why you need to floss.

At RGV Smiles, Dr. Rocky Salinas and his team of dentists will assist you in maintaining a healthy smile with quality dental services. For more information on oral health or to schedule an appointment at RGV Smiles, call 956-661-0900.

Reasons to floss

Dentists and dental hygienists always insist on the importance of flossing, and recommend doing it twice a day. Here are four very good reasons why you should listen to them:

  • To prevent tooth decay. Dental plaque can cause cavities if left between teeth. Brushing alone cannot remove plaque; flossing will remove the bacteria in plaque that causes tooth decay.
  • To prevent gum disease. Gingivitis is caused by an accumulation of plaque around gums and between teeth. Flossing is important to remove all plaque accumulated after a meal.
  • To prevent halitosis (bad breath). Dental plaque is one of the causes of halitosis, and if it’s left between your teeth, it will generate a bad smell in your mouth.
  • To reduce the risk of heart disease. The mouth is an entry point to harmful bacteria that may eventually reach the body’s organs, including cardiac tissue. Dental plaque must be eliminated to prevent microorganisms from reaching the heart through the blood stream and causingin heart disease complications.
